Feminist Art

The Artist
The Artist

Emma Flood is not a very popular artist, I discovered her on Tumblr. She is a 19 year old studying Foundation art. She makes a lot of illustration about a range of different things and she is pursuing a career in Graphic Design.

Tumblr is a micro-blogging and social networking website founded by David Karp in 2007. It is a great way for artists (popular or not popular) to share their political views through many types of artistic media such as a photo, a GIF, a video, etc. I think Flood is one of those artists because she is very young and does not have that many views compared to other artists on Tumblr.

Kimothy Joy is an American illustrator that specializes in watercolor and ink drawings.  She usually does her work in the theme of female empowerment and female heroines. A lot her work is all over social media and on merchandise like shirts and mugs.

Introduction
  • This artwork is significant to my research because it shares the theme of a social issue which is the inequality of genders. It also shows protesting which is my main inspiration for this unit. It also shows evidence of time passing and women protesting through history.

  • My first reaction when I first saw this art work was that it looked cute and nice. I also thought that it looked very inspiring . The second lady with the red and white scarf drew my attention because she reminded me of the pin up girl from feminist posters.

  • The art work made me feel proud and inspired. It also made me feel angry and strong.

  • The first woman and the style of art used reminds me of a graphic novel I once read called Suffragette by Sally Heathcote. It is about how women in England fought for the right to vote.

  • This artwork is significant to my research and work because it has the theme of feminism and female empowerment. It is also has an inclusive message and it predicts the future.

  • My first reaction to this artwork was that I liked the way it looked, I liked the aesthetic of it, it is very simple was has a strong message. I was drawn to the middle and the quote. One thing that got my attention were the red lips that each the females had.

  • The artwork made me feel part of something or included, it made me feel happy and positive.

  • It reminds me of this art collection I saw on Pinterest called Girly Things because of the red lips and simple color palette.

Background / Association & Intentions

Flood's work is clearly about Feminism, it was made very recently so I think that her work was inspired by Women's day (March 8th 2016).  Some other events that might have triggered he work could have been Donald Trump's Ingratiation, The women's march and possibly the American congress ruling about abortion.

  • Donald Trump's Inauguration- It was very shocking and controversial that Donald Trump won the American presidential election because Trump is a controversial figure as he is known to have made sexist and racist remarks. He has been called out for his objectification of women. An example was in 1992 with at at interview with the New York Times, he said a phrase referring to women "You have to treat 'em like s----" In another interview with ABC news he compared women to buildings and said “I think that putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing,” said Trump. “Unfortunately, after they're a star, the fun is over for me. It's like a creation process. It's almost like creating a building. It's pretty sad.”

  • The Women's march- The women's march happened the same day as Donald Trump's Inauguration. It occurred on January 21-22 2016, it was a worldwide protest where many countries across Europe and North America. It was the largest single-day demonstration in U.S. history. The protests were aimed at Donald Trump. The goals were to protest issues such as women's right, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, gender equality, racial equality, worker rights, environmental protection and many more.

Ideas & Intentions
Ideas & Intentions
  • The artist is trying to depict feminism over the years and how women and protesting have evolved over time.

  • The artist is also trying to give the idea that women don't give up and women have always been fighting for their rights.

  • The work is also showing that all types of women are fighting foe their rights and fight for quality. She does this by portraying different kinds of women in different periods of time.

  • There are six women shown in the work, each of them represent a time period or a race or religion.

  • I think The first women is supposed to be from the late 1800s and early 1900s time era, specifically suffragettes. Suffragettes were members of women's organizations in the late-19th and early-20th centuries which advocated the extension of the "franchise", or the right to vote in public elections, to women.

  • The second woman seems like she's from an old poster with the words "We can do this!". She is also called 'Rosie the Riveter' and was a cultural icon  in the US, representing the American woman working in factories and shipyards during WWII.

  • The third woman is suppose to represent a black woman during the 60s. You can tell she;s from the 60s because of her hairstyle and he dress

  • The fourth woman is suppose to represent a black woman in the 70s that is fighting for racial equality and gender equality. She looks like she could be from the Black Panther Party. The BPP was a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization active in the United States from 1966 until 1982. You can tell because of her protest sign is black fist, which is the organization's symbol and she has a natural afro.

  • The fifth woman looks like she could be from this present time. She has an edgy style with ripped jeans, heavy boos and short hair. I think she represents outcasts because it seems like an outcast's cliche style.

  • The last woman is Muslim, this is obvious because she is wearing a hijab. Although some people think that Islam is against women's right because of the strict Islamic law about women covering themselves and other rules about that are build on patriarchy, there are actually a lot of Muslim feminists.

  • I think the artist tried to show that how different kinds of women are united into fighting for the same cause of women's rights.

  • With the words "The Future is Female" in the middle of the artwork, I think that it is about what women are going through now and how it is going to change. Women today are being underpaid, overworked, cat called, harassed and are being blamed for things they should not be blamed for. But the future could be anything and it could be bright and the future is also up for grabs and women are going to grab it.

  • The artwork also celebrate all kinds of women. Women of different races, religions, sizes, hair- everything.

  • The art is also trying to convey that any and every time of women could be and should be a feminist.

  • Because of simplicity of the art work, the artist is show that feminism is simple.  A lot of people think of feminism as a very complicated subject, some people think that feminists are people who look down on stay at home moms and want all the power out of male hands and they hate men and  girly things like heels and dresses. But actually feminism is just the belief that men and women should have equal right and opportunities.

  • Th artist chose to only draw the women's heads to convey the idea that the best part of a women is her brain not her body and women should not be objectified or judged because of their bodies.

Value
Value
  • This work is important to my work because it conveys specific topics that I am interested in creating my work around such as feminism, protesting and the power of the people.

  • The most important thing I learnt about this artwork is how different women have fought and protested over time.

  • I like this artwork because it shows how time passes but the characteristic of women have always been strong. Although I think it is a little too simple and lacks detail.

  • In my opinion, this artwork has changed I've analysed it because I realized that every woman in the artwork tells a different story and that inspires me.

  • This work is important for my work because it predicts  the future about feminism and it celebrates diversity.

  • The most important thing I learnt about this work is how an artwork with simplicity could have a lot of meaning.

  • I don't really like this artwork because I find it too simple and plain with the menaing and the aesthetics.

  • In my opinion, this artwork has not really changed since I've analysed it.
